About this ride

The Wadandi Track is one of the Margaret River region’s best easy cycling adventures, following the former Busselton–Flinders Bay railway corridor through the heart of Western Australia’s South West. The main established Margaret River section currently runs around 31 km one way from Cowaramup, through Margaret River and Witchcliffe, to Sebbes Road, passing through peppermint, jarrah and young karri forest, vineyards, farmland and picturesque creek valleys. Its gentle gradients and mostly firm gravel surface make it ideal for families, beginner riders, gravel bikes, mountain bikes, hybrids and e-bikes. The route can easily be broken into shorter sections. From Cowaramup to Carters Road is around 11 km, followed by 3.4 km into Margaret River, 4.1 km to Gnarawary Road, 4.6 km to Witchcliffe and another 8.2 km to Sebbes Road. This makes it easy to create anything from a short family outing to a 60+ km return ride. One of the prettiest sections lies immediately north of Margaret River, where the trail crosses numerous historic railway bridges over the river, creeks and seasonal streams. The surrounding forest is rich in birdlife, including blue wrens, parrots and yellow robins, while spring brings an impressive display of wildflowers. The railway heritage is a big part of the experience. The corridor once formed part of the railway between Busselton and Flinders Bay, serving the timber, agricultural and local communities of the region before closing in 1957. The trail was previously known as Rails to Trails before being renamed Wadandi Track in recognition of the Wadandi people, the Traditional Owners of the area. For mountain bikers, the Wadandi Track is also an incredibly useful spine connecting Margaret River’s riding areas. Around Margaret River, riders can branch off towards networks including Wooditjup and The Pines, making it possible to combine relaxed rail-trail kilometres with proper singletrack in the same ride. The track is set to become much bigger. A $17.5 million expansion is currently underway, with completion planned between 2024–25 and 2027–28. Once finished, the Wadandi Track is intended to stretch approximately 109 km from Busselton to Flinders Bay at Augusta, following the former railway corridor and creating a major long-distance cycling trail through the Margaret River region. RTS Tip: For a great first ride, tackle Cowaramup to Margaret River, approximately 14 km one way. It gives you forest, historic bridges and beautiful countryside, with plenty of options for a post-ride coffee or lunch at either end. For a bigger day, continue through Witchcliffe to Sebbes Road for the full 31 km. The trail is generally easy, but sections can become loose or muddy during wetter months, so gravel or MTB tyres are a good choice. And keep an eye on the expansion — this is on its way to becoming an epic 109 km South West rail-trail adventure.
