Waranga (Rushworth) Rail Trail

The Waranga Rail Trail is a 19km shared-use trail connecting the historic towns of Rushworth and Murchison in northern Victoria. Following the route of the former railway line, the mostly flat trail travels through bushland, farmland and former gold-mining country, skirting the impressive Waranga Basin and passing the wetlands of Doctors Swamp Wildlife Reserve. The route combines fine gravel with a short asphalt section near Rushworth and crosses several restored railway bridges, including the historic bridge over the Stuart Murray Canal. With relatively gentle terrain and plenty to see along the way, it’s a great option for gravel bikes, hybrids and mountain bikes, with Rushworth or Murchison making an easy turnaround point for a 38km return ride. RTS Tip: Make time to explore the towns at either end — both Rushworth and Murchison have cafés, bakeries, picnic areas and facilities, making this an easy ride to turn into a relaxed day out. There are two crossings of the busy Murchison–Rushworth Road along the trail, so take care when crossing.
