Wellington Dam & Collie Gravel – Western Australia The forests surrounding Wellington Dam and Collie offer a brilliant mix of gravel roads, fire trails and off-road cycling, making this one of Western Australia's South West destinations worth putting on the gravel bike list. Just outside Collie, Wellington National Park is covered in towering jarrah, marri and blackbutt forest, with the Collie River cutting through the landscape and a huge network of roads and trails providing plenty of opportunities to explore by bike. Rather than one defined gravel route, this is an area where riders can build their own adventure. Expect a mixture of gravel forest roads, old fire trails, shared-use tracks and plenty of climbing as you explore around Wellington Dam, Potters Gorge, Honeymoon Pool and Mount Lennard. The landscape is a big part of the appeal. One minute you're rolling beneath tall forest, the next you're climbing above the Collie River Valley or catching views across Wellington Dam. And of course there's the enormous Reflections mural on Wellington Dam, which makes a pretty spectacular landmark to include in the ride. There are also plenty of opportunities to mix gravel with mountain biking. The wider Wambenger Trails network around Wellington includes purpose-built MTB trails alongside established shared-use trails and forest roads, so riders can tailor the day depending on their bike, ability and appetite for something a little more technical. Collie itself makes a great base for a few days of riding, with an extensive cycling network throughout the region and easy access to Wellington National Park. Combine Wellington Dam with the area's other gravel, mountain bike and bikepacking opportunities and there's easily enough riding to justify an entire South West WA cycling weekend. RTS Tip: There isn't one single Wellington Dam gravel route — there's a whole network to explore. Ride The State will continue working on getting some of the best Collie and Wellington gravel loops added as individual Ride Cards over time. Until then, use the available mapping and official trail information to build a route that suits your bike and ability. Forest road and trail conditions can change with weather, fire management and seasonal works, so check current DBCA park alerts and access information before setting out. Carry offline navigation, plenty of water and basic repair equipment, particularly when heading deeper into the forest.
