About this ride

The Woodend to Daylesford Rail Trail follows the corridor of the former railway through Victoria’s beautiful Central Highlands, although currently only the 6km Domino Rail Trail between Trentham and Lyonville has been developed as a continuous rail trail. Starting beside the historic Trentham Railway Station, the trail heads through peaceful bushland of manna gums, peppermint and mountain gums, with coarse gravel and compacted earth underwheel. Along the way you’ll find remnants of the old railway, historic infrastructure and interpretive signs telling the story of the line, with the chance of spotting wallabies and kangaroos in the surrounding forest. The gentle railway gradient makes it a relaxed ride suited to mountain bikes, gravel bikes and hybrids, with Trentham providing plenty of options for food and a wander before or after the ride. RTS Tip: Despite the name, you can’t currently ride a continuous rail trail from Woodend to Daylesford. The developed Domino section runs 6km from Trentham to Lyonville, making for an easy 12km return ride. There is currently a signed detour around a temporarily closed bridge near Stony Creek, so follow local signage when riding through this section.
