About this ride

Perth – Fremantle Principal Shared Path The Perth – Fremantle Principal Shared Path (PSP) is a high-quality 20 km sealed cycling and walking route linking the Perth CBD with Fremantle through Perth’s western suburbs. Following the Fremantle railway corridor for much of its length, the route passes through West Leederville, Subiaco, Claremont, Swanbourne, Cottesloe, Mosman Park and North Fremantle before continuing towards central Fremantle. The smooth sealed surface and mostly gentle terrain make it ideal for road bikes, gravel bikes, hybrids, e-bikes, commuters and recreational riders. Starting around Yagan Square, riders head west alongside the railway through West Leederville and Subiaco before continuing through Perth’s leafy western suburbs. There are plenty of opportunities to stop along the way, with café and shopping precincts around Subiaco, Claremont and Cottesloe, while a connection along Forrest Street provides an easy detour to Cottesloe Beach. Between Mosman Park and North Fremantle, the route also delivers excellent views towards the Indian Ocean. The path is an important part of Perth’s wider Principal Shared Path network, designed to provide high-quality walking and cycling routes along major railway and freeway corridors. Recent upgrades have progressively removed gaps in the route, including a 2.8 km section from Grant Street to Victoria Street completed in 2019 and another 2.1 km from Victoria Street to North Fremantle Station completed in 2021. Riders should currently be aware of a significant change at the Fremantle end. As of August 2026, works associated with the new Fremantle Traffic Bridge have closed sections of the PSP and Beach Street around the Swan River crossing, with signed pedestrian and cyclist detours operating via Tydeman Road and Queen Victoria Street. These works are expected to affect access until late 2026, so current route information should be checked before riding all the way into Fremantle. RTS Tip: This is a brilliant one-way Perth-to-Fremantle ride, particularly if you want to combine cycling with exploring Cottesloe, North Fremantle and Fremantle. With railway stations positioned along almost the entire route, it’s easy to shorten your ride or use public transport for part of the return. For now, allow extra time around North Fremantle and the Swan River crossing because of the Fremantle Traffic Bridge works and follow the current signed cycling detours rather than relying on an older GPS route.
