Perth – Midland Principal Shared Path
About this ride
The Perth – Midland Principal Shared Path (PSP) is a 17 km sealed cycling and walking route linking the Perth CBD with Midland through Perth’s eastern suburbs. Running largely alongside the Midland railway line, the route passes through East Perth, Mount Lawley, Maylands, Bayswater, Ashfield, Bassendean, Success Hill, Guildford and Woodbridge before reaching Midland. Its smooth sealed surface and predominantly gentle terrain make it ideal for road bikes, gravel bikes, hybrids, e-bikes, commuters and recreational cyclists. The route provides a largely traffic-separated way to explore Perth’s eastern corridor, passing railway stations throughout the journey and crossing the Swan River near Guildford. Around Bassendean, riders pass close to the Railway Museum, while historic Guildford makes an excellent stop with cafés, shops and heritage buildings only a short distance from the path. The completed section beside Success Hill Station closed a previous gap in the route, improving the continuous off-road connection between Perth and the eastern suburbs. The Midland PSP is also an important part of Perth’s much larger cycling network. At the city end it connects with other Principal Shared Paths and routes around the Swan River, Perth CBD, Fremantle and the northern suburbs. At the eastern end, Midland acts as a gateway towards the Perth Hills, where riders can continue towards routes including the Railway Reserves Heritage Trail, Kep Track and Mundaring Weir. WA’s PSP network is designed as the backbone of metropolitan cycling, generally following major railway and freeway corridors to provide direct, safer off-road travel. There’s also plenty of railway history along the journey. The Midland railway corridor dates to 1881, when the original Eastern Railway connected Fremantle, Perth and Guildford. Near Midland, riders can explore the historic Midland Railway Workshops precinct, which served as the main workshops for the Western Australian Government Railways for more than 80 years before closing in 1994. RTS Tip: At around 17 km one way, Perth to Midland makes an excellent ride-and-train adventure, with railway stations positioned regularly along the route if you want to shorten the ride. For something much bigger, use Midland as your launch point into the Perth Hills, linking towards the Railway Reserves Heritage Trail and Mundaring. Check the latest WA cycling maps before setting out, as infrastructure around Midland has continued to evolve with station and shared-path projects.
