Fox Creek - Adelaide Hills premier network

Fox Creek Bike Park at Cudlee Creek in the Adelaide Hills is one of South Australia's premier mountain bike destinations, with more than 50 km of singletrack across a huge network. Difficulty on the card is Green, Blue and Black.

The park mixes cross-country, flow, downhill and technical trails, plus a dedicated jumps park and skills area. Beginners can start on easier flow such as Green Goblin Guts and Blue Groove before considering black gravity lines. There is also adaptive riding on Allen's Orange Whip. Entry to the park is free.

Who you'll often find here

Good to know: start at the main Trail Hub and use the easier flow trails and skills area before harder gravity lines. The park closes on Total Fire Ban days - check the ride card and live trail status before you drive out, and avoid riding when trails are wet or muddy.

O'Halloran Hill - southern suburbs progression hub

O'Halloran Hill sits in Adelaide's southern suburbs within the O'Halloran Hill section of Glenthorne National Park–Ityamaiitpinna Yarta, around 18 km south of the CBD. The card lists around 18 km of dedicated MTB trails with difficulty Green, Blue and Black.

Beginners and families have named easy options including Easy As, Upstart, Haarsma's Vision, Sylvanian Families, Wiggles and Grom Flow. Easy As pairs with the 1.95 km Upstart climb for a solid first progression loop. Step up later to blues such as Dam Revamp and Blue Luge before the advanced gravity lines.

Who you'll often find here

  • Inside Line Downhill - O'Halloran Hill is on the club's SA gravity venue list; First Descent Series is aimed at newer downhill racers
  • Local families and after-work riders building confidence on the green loops - save the card, then check Events

Good to know: brilliant for progression - Easy As/Upstart first, then blues, then advanced lines once you are comfortable. Don't confuse the MTB network with flatter trails on the other side of Majors Road. The park closes on Catastrophic Fire Danger days and may close on Extreme days.

Cobbler Creek - northern suburbs greens and pump track

Cobbler Creek Recreation Park sits around 20 km north of Adelaide between Golden Grove and Salisbury. The card lists more than 20 km of shared-use and purpose-built riding with difficulty Green, Blue, Black and Double Black - and it is particularly good for beginner and intermediate riders.

Start on the Beginners' Circuit, Easy Does It and KAFNARFA Circuit, then step into longer loops such as the 3 km Ruins Loop, 3 km Babbler Loop and 4 km Valley Circuit. Pedler's Paddock adds a pump track and jump lines for skills practice.

Who you'll often find here

  • Adelaide Mountain Bike Club - Cobbler Creek sits on AMBC's SA hit list alongside Eagle and Craigburn Farm; Junior Dirt Skills and XC racing

Good to know: mix and match connectors rather than locking into one loop. Families and newer riders should start around Pedler's Paddock and the Smith Road picnic area. Many trails are shared with walkers - give way, avoid wet trails, and check fire conditions.

Shepherds Hill - south Adelaide skills and family greens

Shepherds Hill in Shepherds Hill Recreation Park sits around 11 km south of the CBD. The card lists around 16 km of MTB trails (distance field 23 km) with difficulty Green and Blue - family-friendly green loops through to punchy XC and intermediate downhill.

Easier shared-use options include the River Red Gum Loop, Seaview Loop and Grey Box Loop. At the Ayliffes Road entrance, the Kids Zone and The Bowl (pump and jump) make this especially good for skills sessions before you hit the main network.

Who you'll often find here

  • Families and newer riders sessioning the Kids Zone and The Bowl - then link toward nearby Sturt Gorge when you want more singletrack

Good to know: start at Ayliffes Road with a few skills laps, then warm up on the easier loops before Diagonal Ascent and the Intermediate Downhill. Watch Archery Club warning flags - no access when the red flag is flying. Park closes on Catastrophic Fire Danger days.

Anstey Hill - north-east suburbs with a friendly first loop

Anstey Hill Recreation Park brings a varied MTB network to Adelaide's north-eastern suburbs (Tea Tree Gully). The card lists around 25 km of shared-use trails and eight designated mountain bike routes, with distance field 8 km and difficulty Green, Blue and Black.

Beginners can start on the short Little Quarry Loop. Intermediate loops include Yellow-tail, Silver Mine, Wednesday, Bursaria and Pink Gum. Leave Grand Canyon Downhill and Wildside Downhill until you are ready for dedicated one-way advanced descents.

Who you'll often find here

  • North-east Adelaide riders building from Little Quarry into the blue loops - save the card, then look at Events for club sessions nearby

Good to know: Anstey mixes shared-use trails, MTB-only descents and walking-only tracks - check the park map and signage. Avoid wet or muddy trails and check park and fire closures before you go.

Belair National Park - Mount Lofty greens with a cafe day out

Belair National Park brings mountain biking into Mount Lofty Ranges bushland, just 25 minutes from Adelaide's CBD. Difficulty on the card is Green, Blue, Black and Double Black, with distance 13 km.

For an easier first visit, the 4 km Microcarpa Loop combines relatively gentle riding with some intermediate sections. The 13 km Adventure Loop packs more climbing, steep fire roads and tight technical singletrack - save it until you are ready. Picnic areas, toilets and a café make it easy to turn a ride into a full day out.

Who you'll often find here

  • Mixed-ability groups and families pairing a green loop with a park day - check Events for nearby club activity

Good to know: start with Microcarpa before Adventure Loop. Many Belair trails are shared with walkers and horse riders - watch your speed and stick to designated cycling trails. Avoid wet or muddy conditions.

Sturt Gorge and Craigburn Farm - south Adelaide singletrack playground

Sturt Gorge Recreation Park sits around 13–15 km south of the CBD, with more than 40 km of singletrack and shared-use trails through the gorge and adjoining Craigburn Farm. Difficulty on the card is Green, Blue and Black. Entry is free.

Craigburn Farm is the main purpose-built hub. Easier options include Surf and Turf (1.2 km), Walk the Dog (1.8 km) and Lakeview (1.5 km). Intermediate favourites include Sidewinder, Gunners Run and Cow Bones Loop. Leave rockier lines such as Sticks and Stones and Craigberms until you have a few green-blue laps under your belt.

Who you'll often find here

Good to know: first visit - start in Craigburn Farm and link Sidewinder, Gunners Run and Cow Bones Loop. Download the official map before exploring deeper into the gorge - some routes include walking-only sections. Cyclists must give way on shared trails.

Eagle MTB Park - skills, pump and rocky progression near the city

Eagle MTB Park at Leawood Gardens is just 12 km south-east of Adelaide's CBD. The card lists roughly 21 km of cross-country trails with difficulty Blue, Black and Double Black - plus a dedicated downhill trail, skills development area, jumps park and trials zone.

There is no green rating on the card, so treat Eagle as a skills and progression stop rather than your very first Adelaide green day. Warm up in the pump and skills zone, then try intermediate trails such as Fledgling, Hawkeye, North Face, Southside, Top Deck, Valley Trail and Blue Gums before anything steeper.

Who you'll often find here

Good to know: parking and toilets are available; take your own drinking water and plenty of spares - the rocks are hard on tyres. Open sunrise to sunset; closes during Total Fire Bans and catastrophic fire danger.

Mount Barker and Tara-Illa - Hills day-trip greens

Mount Barker District MTB Trails sit in the Adelaide Hills around 35 km south-east of Adelaide. Difficulty on the card is Green and Blue, distance 8 km. Aston Hills Mountain Bike Park is a key purpose-built hub with an easy climbing trail, flowing descents, a pump track and skills zone - trails such as Aston Flow, Easy Climb and Lower Path suit families and newer riders.

Nearby Tara-Illa Bike Park on the edge of Hahndorf is a small community-focused park with difficulty Green and Blue - a handy second Hills stop close to town.

Who you'll often find here

  • Families and Hills locals stacking Aston Hills skills with a Hahndorf coffee stop - save both cards, then check Events

Good to know: start at Aston Hills with Easy Climb, the pump track and skills zone before the flow trails. The wider Mount Barker district also links into linear paths and wetlands for longer mixed-surface days - follow signage so you stay on bike-legal routes.

How to pick your first Adelaide MTB day

  1. Start close. O'Halloran Hill, Shepherds Hill or Cobbler Creek if you want suburban greens; Belair or Anstey Hill for a park day; Fox Creek when you are ready for a full Hills network.
  2. Green first. Warm up on marked easy loops and skills areas (Kids Zone / The Bowl, Pedler's Paddock, Easy As/Upstart, Microcarpa) before blues and blacks.
  3. Leave Eagle's rocks and gravity lines for progression. Session the skills zone first; save double blacks and DH for later.
  4. Ride with a club. Adelaide Mountain Bike Club (Junior Dirt Skills and XC), Gravity Enduro SA (Novice enduro pathway) and Inside Line (First Descent Series) all give newer riders a welcoming way in.
  5. Save venues on Ride the State. Free account, save the cards above, build a trip if you are stacking a weekend (south suburbs greens + Fox Creek, or Mount Barker + Tara-Illa).
  6. Check park and fire notices. Closures and wet-weather damage change - follow the ride card and park notices on the day.
