This guide maps beginner-friendly MTB hubs Canberra riders actually use, links the live Ride the State cards, and points you at the clubs that keep the ACT rolling. Conditions, forestry closures and fire restrictions change — check the ride page and Parks ACT or venue notices before you go.

Stromlo Forest Park - flagship ACT bike park
Stromlo Forest Park is Canberra's flagship mountain bike destination and one of Australia's best-known purpose-built parks. Difficulty on the card is Green, Blue and Black, distance about 50 km, tagged Skills / Pump Track with family-friendly notes.
The 1,200-hectare multi-sport precinct sits around 15 minutes from the city centre with more than 50 km of professionally built trails — flowing singletrack, berms, jumps, rock features and dedicated climbs. Beginners are well looked after: the Evolution Coaching Trails, The Playground and a pump track give you somewhere to practise cornering and jumps before heading onto the mountain. Adaptive riders are also supported, with mapping identifying more than 20 adaptive-accessible trail sections. Gravity lines and shuttles (typically Friday–Sunday, public holidays and ACT school holidays) sit further up the progression ladder.
Who you'll often find here
- First-timers and families warming up on greens, the Playground and the pump track
- Canberra Off-Road Cyclists (CORC) members racing XC and Dirt Crits across the Stromlo network
Good to know: start on green loops and the skills areas before blues, blacks and downhill. Do not try to cover the whole mountain on day one — plan by ability. Check shuttle times and the live ride card for status.
Majura Pines - classic city-edge pine laps
Majura Pines is one of Canberra's classic mountain bike destinations, minutes from the city. Difficulty on the card is Green, Blue, Black and Double Black, distance about 20 km, tagged Bike Park.
Purpose-built singletrack winds through pine forest with smooth flow and berms for newer riders, plus jumps, technical features and steeper descending when you are ready. The compact layout is perfect for repeat laps while you learn the lines.
Who you'll often find here
- After-work riders stacking greens and blues before heading home
- CORC and Dirt Maidens riders sessioning skills and confidence-building laps
Good to know: use your first lap to learn features before adding speed. Majura sits in a working pine plantation — forestry can affect access, so check closures before you go. Start on greens; leave black and double-black lines until you are ready.
Bruce Ridge - CBD woodland intro
Bruce Ridge Nature Reserve is only about 5 km from Canberra's CBD. Difficulty on the card is Green and Blue, distance about 14 km, tagged Bike Park, Family Friendly and Beginner Friendly.
Around 94 hectares of native woodland hold shared cross-country trails built with ACT Parks, Friends of Bruce Ridge, IMBA and local riders. Expect fun, flowing XC rather than a gravity bike park — ideal for a first Canberra dirt day without driving to the pines.
Who you'll often find here
- Newer riders and families grabbing an easy urban woodland lap
- Locals linking Bruce Ridge with Centenary Trail or Belconnen-side paths
Good to know: this is a protected nature reserve — stay on designated trails, respect wildlife and shared-use etiquette. Treat it as a green/blue XC intro, not a jumps park.
National Arboretum - scenic green shared tracks
National Arboretum MTB Trails sit about 6 km from the city centre across a 250-hectare landscape. Difficulty on the card is Green, distance about 20 km, tagged Family Friendly, Beginner Friendly and Singletrack.
Rather than a purpose-built bike park, the Arboretum offers unsealed tracks, management trails and shared-use singletrack between forests of rare and culturally significant trees. The Canberra Centenary Trail passes through as part of the link between Black Mountain and Stromlo — mostly green/easy with roots, rocks and short steep pinches. Brilliant views across Lake Burley Griffin reward the climbs toward Dairy Farmers Hill.
Who you'll often find here
- Riders wanting scenic, less-technical dirt close to town
- Pedal Power ACT members mixing Arboretum tracks with path and Centenary sections
Good to know: shared-use network — give way to walkers, runners and horses, and respect the 10 km/h speed limit on shared tracks. Stick to designated cycling routes and download the Arboretum map.
Cotter Pines - signed green/blue plantation hub
Cotter Pines is one of Canberra's newer trail networks, about half an hour from the city centre. Difficulty on the card is Green and Blue, distance about 18 km (roughly 16 km of singletrack across nearly 19 trails), tagged Bike Park, Family Friendly and Beginner Friendly.
Built through a 360 ha pine plantation by Kowalski Brothers Trailworks, Iconic Trails and ACT Government Sport and Recreation, Cotter mixes hand-built twisty corners with machine-built flow. A detailed map at the start of The Spine near the main car park and clear signage make it beginner-friendly to navigate. Pause at the Eagle Rock Lounge for views over Stony Creek Reserve.
Who you'll often find here
- Riders stepping up from Bruce Ridge or Arboretum greens into a proper signed trail centre
- CORC race and social days when the calendar visits Cotter
Good to know: stick to green and blue signposted lines on your first visit. Check plantation and Parks notices for closures.
Tuggeranong Pines - compact southside singletrack
Tuggeranong Pines is a compact pine-forest network in Canberra's south. Difficulty on the card is Green and Black, distance about 5 km, tagged Bike Park. The live card notes these as unsanctioned trails.
Expect flowing sections, berms, climbs and faster descents packed into a small interconnected layout — good for practising skills and repeating favourite sections once you know the lines.
Who you'll often find here
- Southside trail riders sessioning short loops after work
- Riders pairing Tuggeranong with a skills warm-up at Jerrabomberra Pump Track
Good to know: take an easier green-leaning lap first; blacks are a step up. Active plantation — forestry can close trails. Confirm current access and conditions on the ride card before you turn up.
Molonglo Pines & Zoo Pines - near-city exploratory dirt
Molonglo Pines and Zoo Pines sit close to the city with a mix of singletrack, fire trails and technical bush riding. Difficulty on the card is Green, Blue and Black, distance about 20 km, tagged Bike Park.
Short climbs, flow, rocky features and tighter lines suit XC and trail bikes. Access and layouts can change, so treat this as an exploratory near-city option rather than a fully signed trail centre.
Who you'll often find here
- Locals building confidence on greens and blues before Stromlo or Majura blacks
- Riders linking Molonglo-side dirt with Arboretum or Centenary connections
Good to know: start on the friendlier lines; leave black rock for later. Check the latest local trail info and closures — do not rely on an old route alone.
Sparrow Hill & East Kowen - bigger-day progression
Sparrow Hill & East Kowen form one of Canberra's largest mountain bike networks. Difficulty on the card is Green, Blue, Black and Double Black, distance about 60 km, tagged Bike Park with XC marathon notes.
Kilometres of purpose-built singletrack through pine and native bush give flowing sections, punchy climbs, technical features and fast descents. Link the two areas for anything from a quick spin to a big day — a natural step once Stromlo and Majura greens feel comfortable.
Who you'll often find here
- CORC XC and endurance racers covering ground
- Trail riders planning a full-day Kowen / Sparrow mission
Good to know: plan your route before you roll — junctions are plentiful. Start on greens and blues; blacks and double blacks are progression, not day-one goals. Forestry and events can affect access.
Canberra Centenary Trail - multi-use intro miles
Canberra Centenary Trail is the Bush Capital's epic shared-use loop. Difficulty on the card is Green and Blue, distance about 138 km with roughly 1,805 m elevation, tagged Loop Trail, Family Friendly and Beginner Friendly.
Parks ACT's current route splits into seven sections past landmarks including Parliament House, Mount Ainslie, Mulligans Flat, Hall, Black Mountain, the National Arboretum, Stromlo, Kambah Pool and Pine Island. Most cycling is green — sealed paths, gravel management trails and shared singletrack — with Northern and Southern sections stepping to blue where terrain gets steeper and rockier. Ride one section, link a few, or bikepack the full loop over about three days.
Who you'll often find here
- Newer off-road riders building fitness and bike-handling on green sections
- Pedal Power ACT social riders mixing paths, gravel and dirt
Good to know: you do not need to smash the whole 138 km. Download the official GPX — signage can be thin and reception patchy. Carry water on remote sections and check Parks ACT alerts and fire conditions.
Jerrabomberra Pump Track - Capital Region skills warm-up
Jerrabomberra Pump Track is a council-built asphalt pump track at David Madew Oval in Jerrabomberra / Queanbeyan (NSW, Capital Region). Difficulty on the card is All levels, tagged Skills / Pump Track.
Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council completed construction in February 2025; the track opened to the public on 21 March 2025. Use it as a low-pressure skills session — pump, corner and flow — before or after a dirt day at Tuggeranong or Majura. Distinct from Mount Jerrabomberra MTB trails.
Who you'll often find here
- Families and newer riders building bike skills on asphalt
- Southside and Queanbeyan riders warming up before pine-forest laps
Good to know: public open-space pump — share the space, keep sessions friendly, and leave the steeper dirt parks for after you can hold a clean pump lap.
How to pick your first Canberra MTB day
- Start close. Bruce Ridge or National Arboretum for CBD-side greens; Stromlo Playground / pump / green loops for a proper bike-park first lap.
- Green and skills first. Warm up at Stromlo skills areas, Jerrabomberra pump, Arboretum shared tracks or Bruce Ridge before blues and blacks.
- City-edge pine progression. Majura greens and blues for repeat laps; Cotter Pines when you want a signed green/blue plantation hub.
- Southside options. Tuggeranong Pines for compact practice (confirm access — unsanctioned / plantation); pair with Jerrabomberra pump.
- Near-city exploratory. Molonglo / Zoo Pines for green-to-blue bush once you are comfortable reading trail — leave blacks for later.
- Bigger day when ready. Sparrow Hill and East Kowen for distance and progression; stick to greens and blues until you know the junctions.
- Path-to-dirt miles. Centenary Trail sections for green multi-use riding and fitness without committing to a full bike-park day.
