Lysterfield Park - Melbourne's east-side classic
Lysterfield Park sits about 30 km south-east of Melbourne around Lysterfield Lake. The card lists roughly 24 km of purpose-built MTB trails through eucalypt forest, plantations and rocky hills - beginners through to highly experienced riders.
Newer riders and families get an easy on-ramp: the Lake Circuit Trail, Trail Mix, Lower Blair Witch, plus a dedicated skills park and pump track before you hit the main network. Intermediate and advanced lines climb from there (including the historic State Mountain Bike Course used for the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games).
Who you'll often find here
- Lysterfield District Trail Riders - volunteer MTB club at the heart of this network.
Good to know: picnic areas, toilets and lake access make it an easy first MTB day. Save the ride card, then check Events for club sessions.
You Yangs - Kurrajong (start here) and Stockyards (step up)
Between Melbourne and Geelong, You Yangs Regional Park splits into two MTB areas.
You Yangs - Kurrajong is the easier, more family-friendly half - flatter, flowing trails through eucalypt and Sugar Gum plantations (core loops include Plantation, Lumberjack and Axeman's). Ideal first You Yangs day.
You Yangs - Stockyards is the more technical, gravity-leaning half - granite, quarry terrain, rock gardens and steeper descents. Use it once Kurrajong feels comfortable, not as your first lap.
The wider You Yangs MTB destination has more than 50 km of purpose-built trail across both areas, and they can be linked when you are ready to progress.
Who you'll often find here
- You Yangs Mountain Bike Club
- Geelong Mountain Bike Club - long-established Geelong club with deep You Yangs ties
Good to know: Parks Victoria manages the park - check access and facilities before you drive out. Stockyards has limited on-site facilities compared with other hubs.
Candlebark Park - compact riverside singletrack
Candlebark Park in Templestowe is a compact legal MTB network beside the Yarra - natural-style singletrack for mainly beginner and intermediate riders, with Parks Victoria permitting bikes on the designated trails.
It links to the Main Yarra Trail, so you can ride in rather than drive, and nearby Westerfolds Park adds shared trails, toilets and water.
Good to know: this is bush XC flavour, not a big bike-park build. Stick to bike-legal lines. Save the card and pair it with Bike trails near me for other north-east options.
Plenty Gorge MTB - north-east maze (with local mates)
Plenty Gorge MTB runs through Plenty Gorge Park in Melbourne's north-east. The card describes a huge old-school XC network along the steep-sided Plenty River gorge - tight natural singletrack, roots, rocks, creek crossings and punchy climbs. The local club describes more than 130 km of trails across the park.
It is a brilliant training ground, but it is also a maze. The ride card recommends downloading a current map - and joining a Plenty Gorge MTB Club social with local leaders is the smartest first-timer move. Formalisation work with Parks Victoria is underway; follow club and park updates.

Red Hill MTB Park - Mornington Peninsula progression
Red Hill MTB Park is the mountain bike network in Arthurs Seat State Park - beginner-friendly XC through to enduro and downhill.
First-timers: start on Wonga, then gentle laps combining Loop Trail and Friends. Step up later to blues such as High Roller, Rock Salt, Wombat and Slippery Gypsy. The card notes a big jump between easier trails and black / double-black descents - do not skip the warm-up.
Who you'll often find here
Wombat MTB Trails - Macedon Ranges classic
Wombat MTB Trails sit just outside Woodend in the Macedon Ranges - old-school XC through Wombat State Forest. Victorian Government information on the ride card lists a ~9 km easy loop suitable for beginners and children, plus a longer intermediate option; the Wombat MTB Club describes loop lengths slightly differently, so follow trailhead signage on the day.
Main trailhead is at Fingerpost / Boldiston / Taylor Roads (parking and signage). No toilets or drinking water at the trailhead - plan ahead.

Anglesea Bike Park - Surf Coast skills day
Anglesea Bike Park is a purpose-built facility just out of Anglesea town - Victoria's first professionally designed Mountain Cross (4X) track (World Trail / Glen Jacobs, opened 2006), plus dirt jumps, skills features and log rides. Features range from small and approachable to larger lines.
Who you'll often find here
Good to know: the park closes in rain (and when heavy rain is forecast) to protect the surface - check conditions before you go. Parking, toilets, shelter and picnic areas are on the card.
Easy day without singletrack: Lilydale - Warburton Rail Trail
If you want distance and confidence before committing to roots and rocks, ride the Lilydale - Warburton Rail Trail (the Warby Trail) - about 40 km one way on mostly fine gravel with gentle railway grades through the Yarra Valley. Towns along the way make it easy to shorten.
Pair it with a look at Warburton MTB Park when you are ready for purpose-built green and blue trails in the Ranges (Yarra Ranges Mountain Bikers).
Weekend step-ups (still on Ride the State)
When metro greens feel easy:
- Warburton MTB Park - Yarra Ranges destination park with green through black (World Trail build; green options include Hop Scotch, Settle Down, Warburtron and 3 Owls on the card)
- Djuwang Baring - Creswick Trails - Goldfields stacked-loop network with a strong beginner/intermediate focus and Hammon Park trailhead facilities; Ballarat Mountain Bike Club is a nearby Goldfields hub for club culture
