Goat Farm - Perth Hills classic, 30 minutes from the CBD
The Goat Farm MTB Park sits at Greenmount in the Perth Hills - about 30 minutes from the Perth CBD, and only around 4 km from Midland Railway Station. The card lists over 20 km of purpose-built singletrack, with difficulty Green, Blue, Black and Double Black.
Beginners can build confidence on wide, easy trails before progressing to blue and black-rated singletrack. The park mixes flowing cross-country loops, technical descents, jump lines, adaptive MTB trails and one of WA's premier skills parks - so you can practise drops, berms and jumps before taking them onto the network. Leave legendary descents such as Lucky 13, Legacy and Rampage until you are ready.
Who you'll often find here
- Perth Mountain Bike Club - Goat Farm and Kalamunda sit on the club's primary WA trail list; coaching, socials and racing
Good to know: toilets on site, but no drinking water in the park - carry plenty, especially in summer when shade is limited. Save the ride card, then look at Events for club sessions. Check Trails WA for current conditions.
Kalamunda Trails - jarrah-forest playground in the Hills
Kalamunda Trails is one of Western Australia's best-known mountain bike destinations: an extensive purpose-built network through jarrah forest in the Perth Hills. The card lists around 50 km of riding with difficulty Green, Blue and Black - approachable XC and flow through to rocky technical sections, jumps and steeper descents.
Don't try to ride the whole network in one hit. Pick a few trails that match your ability, build a loop, then save the rest for another visit. Kalamunda works for a quick local lap or a full day once you know the connectors.
Who you'll often find here
- Kalamunda Mountain Bike Collective - volunteer trail stewards of the Kalamunda network; weekend and night socials, junior rides and beginner-friendly opportunities
- Perth Mountain Bike Club - Kalamunda is on their regular WA hit list
Good to know: it can get hot and exposed in warmer months - carry water and check trail conditions before you leave. Join a KMBC social if you can; local knowledge beats guessing the network alone.
Lake Leschenaultia - family greens and blues near Chidlow
Lake Leschenaultia in Chidlow is a family-friendly MTB hub in the Perth Hills, around 45 minutes east of Perth. The card lists a dedicated ~12 km trail network aimed primarily at beginner through intermediate riders - difficulty Green and Blue.
Use Eastern Line (~1.3 km) to climb to the upper trailhead, then progress through Railway Run, Hula and Stewies before stepping up to Yeehaa, Woohoo, Shakes n' Ladders and Blue Panther. There is also a pump track for bike-handling practice, plus an easier ~3 km Lakeside Trail around the water through marri and wandoo woodland.
Who you'll often find here
- Families and newer riders building skills on greens and blues - save the card, then check Events for Hills club sessions nearby
Good to know: parking, toilets, picnic areas, swimming and camping make this an easy family day out; reserve entry is free. Pair with nearby Forsyths Mill for a bigger east-Hills day. In summer, high fire danger can close the MTB trails or the whole reserve - check conditions before you travel.
Langford Park - green and blue Jarrahdale singletrack
Langford Park in Jarrahdale sits about 50 minutes south-east of Perth. The card lists signposted green and blue MTB trails aimed primarily at beginner and intermediate riders - natural, flowing XC through rehabilitated mine areas and jarrah/marri forest.
Favourites include the 5.1 km Yellow Brick Road, 4.4 km Woodley's Loop and 4.1 km The Fox, plus shorter connectors such as Lovers Lane, Reflectors, Valley of Opportunity, Button's Fall, Watch Your Head, Conveyor and The Spine. Many trails link, so you can stack loops as confidence grows. Start on The Spine and Lovers Lane before Woodley's, The Fox and Yellow Brick Road.
Who you'll often find here
- Perth Mountain Bike Club - metro WA MTB club that lists Kalamunda, Goat Farm and wider WA trails on its card; useful for socials and coaching as you range south into Jarrahdale
Good to know: parking, toilets, picnic and barbecue facilities at the recreation area. Mobile coverage can be patchy - download a map before you ride. A dual-use link into Jarrahdale township adds an easy town-and-trail option. When you are ready for a bigger Peel day trip, save Dwellingup Trails and Peel District Mountain Bike Club.
Forsyths Mill - compact Hills loop with a beginner start
Forsyths Mill near Sawyers Valley is a compact ~6 km cross-country loop that squeezes plenty of fun into a short ride. Difficulty on the card is Green, Blue and Black. Expect fast corners, tight turns, log rollovers, bomb holes and jumps, with very little major climbing - ideal for mixed-ability groups or repeated laps.
There is a short beginner loop near the car park; harder optional obstacles sit towards the end of the main circuit. The challenge is constant features rather than big elevation - classic old-school Perth Hills flavour.
Who you'll often find here
- Kalamunda Mountain Bike Collective - Forsyths Mill sits on the Collective's primary trails list alongside Kalamunda
Good to know: rides best with a little moisture in cooler months; summer pea gravel can get loose. Toilets, picnic facilities and parking at the trailhead - bring your own water. Pair with nearby Lake Leschenaultia for a bigger Hills day.
Booyeembara Park - Fremantle skills and micro-DH
Booyeembara Park in White Gum Valley, Fremantle, packs a lot into a compact urban MTB facility - home to WA's first micro-downhill trails. Difficulty on the card is Blue and Black, with a beginner-friendly pump track at the hub.
Two roughly 400 m purpose-built descents: a flowy blue jump line (tabletops, hips, berms and rollers) and a serious black line with drops, step-ups, a wooden wall ride and advanced jumps. An easy return climb gets you back for another lap. Newer riders should session the pump track, then the blue line, before considering the black.
Who you'll often find here
- Perth Mountain Bike Club - metro WA MTB community; use Booyeembara as a skills session between Goat Farm or Kalamunda days
Good to know: shelters, seating, drinking water, bike parking and nearby toilets make it an easy after-work skills stop. Short trails, high repetition - perfect for building confidence without a full Hills day.
Dwellingup and Murray Valley - Peel day-trip progression
Dwellingup Trails is one of WA's premier MTB destinations: purpose-built singletrack running from town into jarrah forest, linking through Marrinup toward Turner Hill - around 68 km of dedicated trail with green and blue XC plus steeper options for progressing riders.
Just south of town, Murray Valley MTB Trails inside Lane Poole Reserve adds more than 50 km of purpose-built riding: the card lists 5 green, 8 blue and 3 black trails around the upper trailhead known as The Roost. Start on easier lines such as Year 1, then step into blues before the black gravity terrain. Climbing trails (and a shuttle road off Murray Valley Road) support repeat descending laps.
Who you'll often find here
- Peel District Mountain Bike Club - primary trails include Dwellingup and Turner Hill; coaching, socials and trail advocacy across Peel
Good to know: start at the Dwellingup Trails and Visitor Centre for maps and current conditions. Lane Poole Reserve entry fees apply for Murray Valley; no drinking water at that trailhead - fill up in town. Treat Murray Valley blacks as progression, not your first WA lap. Check Trails WA before you drive down.
How to pick your first Perth MTB day
- Start close. Goat Farm or Kalamunda if you are east/Hills-side; Booyeembara for a Fremantle skills session; Langford Park or Lake Leschenaultia if you want green-and-blue forest without jumping straight into blacks.
- Green first. Warm up on marked easy loops and skills areas before blues and blacks.
- Ride with a club. Perth Mountain Bike Club, Kalamunda Mountain Bike Collective and Peel District Mountain Bike Club all welcome newer riders - socials beat guessing the network alone.
- Save venues on Ride the State. Free account, save the cards above, build a trip if you are stacking a weekend (Hills greens + Dwellingup, or Leschenaultia + Forsyths Mill).
- Check park and trail notices. Closures, fire danger and wet-weather damage change - follow Trails WA, DBCA park pages and the ride card on the day.
