Manly Dam - Northern Beaches classic XC

Manly Dam in Manly Warringah War Memorial Park is one of Sydney's most established mountain bike rides. Difficulty on the card is Green and Blue, distance about 10 km (the official loop is around 11 km), with ride type tagged Singletrack, Family Friendly and Beginner Friendly.

Expect exposed sandstone, rock slabs, roots, technical climbs and short punchy descents rather than long machine-built flow. You are riding bushland around one of the city's large freshwater lakes, yet you stay close to Manly and the coast. Picnic areas, toilets and walking trails make it easy to turn a ride into a longer day out.

Who you'll often find here

Good to know: night riding is not permitted, and the trail can close after heavy rain or for maintenance - check the live status on the ride card before every visit. Sandstone features make the loop feel bigger than the kilometres suggest; walk anything that looks beyond you on a first lap.

Bare Creek Bike Park - Belrose skills and progression

Bare Creek Bike Park in Belrose is a purpose-built freeride and gravity park on the Northern Beaches. Difficulty on the card is Green, Blue, Black and Double Black. The park packs downhill trails, flow lines, dirt jumps, skills features and a pump track into a compact area (around 1.6 km of dedicated downhill and flow trails).

This is session-style riding: climb back up and repeat lines rather than one long XC loop. Beginners can start on the greener and skills features before stepping into blues and gravity lines.

Who you'll often find here

Good to know: start on green and skills features before black and double-black lines. Check council trail status and park notices; avoid wet sessions when features get greasy.

Centre Trail - easy Ku-ring-gai Chase intro

Centre Trail is a named NSW National Parks cycling trail in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park near Terrey Hills. Difficulty on the card is Green and Blue, distance 3.5 km, tagged Out and Back, Family Friendly and Beginner Friendly.

NPWS describes an easy one-way mountain bike ride along a ridge off McCarrs Creek Road, with heathland, spring wildflowers, and views over Coal and Candle Creek and Akuna Bay. The trail leads to a rock escarpment with Aboriginal rock engravings. Toilets and picnic facilities sit at Illawong Bay on Liberator General San Martin Drive. Park entry fees apply.

Who you'll often find here

  • Families and newer riders looking for an NPWS-graded Easy outing on the northern fringe
  • Garigal Gorillas MTB Club riders combining Chase days with nearby Garigal singletrack

Good to know: this is a named NPWS bike trail card, not a card for the whole national park. Stick to bike-legal routes, respect cultural sites, and check park fees and closures before you go.

Old Mans Valley - Hornsby green-to-black network

Old Mans Valley (Hornsby Mountain Bike Trail) is a purpose-built network in the bushland below Hornsby town centre. Difficulty on the card is Green, Blue and Black, distance about 6 km of official purpose-built trail, with a Green Loop through to black descents.

One of its biggest advantages is accessibility - you can be on genuine MTB singletrack within minutes of Hornsby Station and the surrounding shops. Hornsby Shire Council describes the official network at around 6 km; Trailforks maps a broader collection of trail sections around the valley.

Who you'll often find here

  • Sydney Hills MTB Club - Hills and Hornsby-side riders using OMV as a home network
  • After-work riders stacking a Green Loop before blues

Good to know: start on the Green Loop and skills features before blue and black descents. Check council trail status and avoid riding when wet.

Garden MTB Trail - Mount Annan family loops

Garden MTB Trail sits inside the Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan in Sydney's south-west. Difficulty on the card is Green and Blue, tagged Bike Park, Family Friendly and Beginner Friendly. Camden Council describes it as the Macarthur region's first designated mountain bike trail - and the only MTB trail set within a botanic garden.

The 1 km Kids Loop is a strong introduction for younger riders. The 3.9 km Family Loop is generally smooth with a few obstacles. Riders ready for more can tackle the 2.5 km Intermediate loop.

Who you'll often find here

  • Families and Macarthur beginners building confidence on Kids and Family loops
  • Riders stacking a Botanic Garden day with nearby Ingleburn

Good to know: stay on the marked MTB loops inside the garden and follow garden opening hours and trail notices. Perfect first south-west Sydney day.

Ingleburn - short green and blue skills loops

Ingleburn Mountain Bike Trail is a purpose-built family-friendly skills trail at Ingleburn Reserve in Campbelltown. Difficulty on the card is Green and Blue, distance about 0.77 km, tagged Skills, Pump Track, Family Friendly and Beginner Friendly.

Campbelltown City Council describes a 250 m beginners (green) loop, a 450 m intermediate (blue) loop and an 80 m shared loop, with jumps, rollovers, rock gardens and berms. The trail sits near the picnic area at Ingleburn Reserve off Bensley Road.

Who you'll often find here

  • Families and newer riders sessioning short loops before longer Macarthur days
  • Locals pairing Ingleburn skills with Garden MTB Trail

Good to know: council says the track closes when rainfall exceeds 10 mm - check the council trail status before visiting. Ideal skills warm-up, not a long XC day.

Waratah Park Short Track - Sutherland skills circuit

Waratah Park Mountain Bike Short Track is a purpose-built MTB circuit at Waratah Park, Sutherland (distinct from the road/criterium oval loops). Difficulty on the card is All levels, distance about 2 km, tagged Singletrack, Family Friendly and Beginner Friendly.

Sutherland Shire Council lists the short track at 40 Rawson Avenue as part of the Waratah Park cycling precinct, with tight and twisty corners, jumps, rock gardens, multiple lines, parking and floodlights. Mill Creek's where-to-ride notes say it sits next to the Sutherland Shire Cycling Club clubhouse and is maintained by the club - relatively flat-gradient singletrack aimed at beginners and skills work.

Who you'll often find here

  • South-side beginners and juniors sessioning under lights
  • Riders warming up before Mill Creek or Loftus

Good to know: great flat-gradient skills circuit - learn corners and lines here before the rockier south Sydney networks.

Loftus - south Sydney beginner-to-black network

Loftus MTB Network sits on the edge of the Royal National Park in Sydney's south. Difficulty on the card is Green, Blue, Black and Double Black, distance field 57 km, with beginner-friendly cross-country through to steep technical descents.

The popular 10 km Loftus Loop is the place to start for beginners and XC riders. More experienced riders later step into trails such as Holy Trail, Bobcats and Signalhouse. Main trailheads are at Loftus Oval and Farnell Avenue.

Who you'll often find here

  • South Sydney riders building from the Loftus Loop into tougher lines
  • Club and social groups using Loftus as a weekend hub - save the card, then check Events

Good to know: start on the Loftus Loop and green/blue options before black and double-black descents. Trails sit beside National Park land - stick to bike-legal routes and check closures after wet weather.

Mill Creek - Lucas Heights progression singletrack

Mill Creek MTB Trails sit in the Lucas Heights Conservation Area in Sydney's south. Difficulty on the card is Green, Blue and Black. Around 10 km of predominantly singletrack, with most individual trails under 1 km, so you can link and repeat sections into a longer session.

The network mixes technical sandstone (Black Hawk Down, Pump Action) with more approachable flow and skills (Hit the Turps, Acacia Missed It, Whipper Snapper). Sutherland Shire Council manages the area with volunteer support from the Mill Creek Trail Association.

Who you'll often find here

  • South-side progressing riders who started at Waratah or Loftus Loop
  • Volunteers and locals maintaining the sandstone character - respect closures and rebuild notices

Good to know: newer riders should favour the more approachable flow and skills lines before committing to rocky technical trails. Avoid wet sandstone sessions.

Knapsack - Lower Blue Mountains sanctioned network

Knapsack MTB Trails at Glenbrook/Lapstone are one of the Lower Blue Mountains' key sanctioned mountain bike areas. Difficulty on the card is Green, Blue and Black, distance about 12 km, with purpose-built singletrack plus the dedicated Stringline Knapsack downhill trail nearby.

Ride Blue Mountains describes Knapsack as having the longest sanctioned MTB trail and the only sanctioned downhill trail in the Blue Mountains. Expect sandstone, rocks, roots, tight natural singletrack and plenty of elevation - old-school Blue Mountains character within easy reach of Western Sydney.

Who you'll often find here

Good to know: start on greener XC lines before blues, blacks and the Stringline DH. Signage can be sparse - stick to recognised Knapsack trails and check fire and park notices.

Yellomundee - Western Sydney / Hawkesbury Heights

Yellomundee Regional Park (Yellomundee MTB Park) at Hawkesbury Heights is one of Western Sydney's most established mountain biking destinations, around 8 km north-west of Penrith. Difficulty on the card is Green, Blue and Black, distance about 10 km.

Expect rocky and rooty singletrack, sandstone features, loose surfaces, creek crossings, short punchy climbs and technical descents rather than smooth bike-park flow. NPWS highlights the area south of Shaws Farm for singletrack across a range of abilities.

Who you'll often find here

Good to know: start on the greener and less technical lines south of Shaws Farm before committing to steeper gravity. Check NPWS park notices and fire conditions.

Ourimbah - Central Coast day-trip network

Ourimbah MTB Park in Ourimbah State Forest on the NSW Central Coast is a long-established destination with cross-country, gravity and technical trail riding. Difficulty on the card is Green, Blue, Black and Double Black, distance about 22 km.

Classic hand-built singletrack, rocky sections, roots, punchy climbs and fast descents reward good bike handling. Beginners should start on greener XC options and leave double blacks and steep gravity for later.

Who you'll often find here

  • Central Coast Mountain Bike Club - the club home for Ourimbah and Coast trails
  • Sydney riders stacking a Central Coast weekend once metro greens feel comfortable

Good to know: do not judge a trail only by colour - Ourimbah keeps plenty of old-school technical character. Check Forestry and club notices, and avoid wet rides.

How to pick your first Sydney MTB day

  1. Start close. Manly Dam or Centre Trail for Northern Beaches / Chase; Old Mans Valley for Hornsby; Garden or Ingleburn for Macarthur; Waratah Short Track or Loftus Loop for the south.
  2. Green and skills first. Warm up on Kids/Family loops, short tracks and green lines before blues, blacks and gravity parks.
  3. Session Bare Creek or Waratah for skills, then return to XC loops once corners and berms feel familiar.
  4. Leave Knapsack DH, Ourimbah gravity and Loftus blacks for progression. Save those cards and step up when you are ready.
