Daisy Hill - Brisbane's southside classic

Daisy Hill Conservation Park sits about 25 km south-east of Brisbane in Logan. The card lists an extensive network of dedicated MTB and shared-use trails through eucalypt forest and koala habitat - greens and blues through to black.

From the Daisy Hill Trail Hub, start on loops such as the 5.2 km Spotted Gum Circuit, 5.7 km Stringybark Circuit and 9 km Buhot Creek Circuit, then branch onto purpose-built lines like Possum Box, Lace Monitor, Jumping Ant, Flying Cloud, Jims, Bronzewing and Bees Knees. Easy and intermediate options, one-way descents and links into the wider Koala Bushland area make it a strong first MTB day for beginners and families.

Who you'll often find here

  • Ipswich Offroad Cyclists - inclusive SE Queensland club that regularly explores Daisy Hill and Gap Creek on social and training rides

Good to know: Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service manages Daisy Hill - check park notices before you go. Save the ride card, then look at Events for club sessions.

Gap Creek - Mt Coot-tha, minutes from the CBD

Gap Creek is tucked into Mt Coot-tha Forest just west of Brisbane's CBD - one of the city's densest MTB networks for beginners through to technical riders.

Warm up on the 2.3 km Gap Creek Circuit, then try Rocket Frog, Bellbird, Cockatoo, Cubberla Creek and Whipbird Way. Newer riders can build confidence on the 450 m Skink Link. Leave Pipeline (large drops, log rollovers, timber wall-ride) until you are ready - it is the most difficult official trail in the park.

Who you'll often find here

Good to know: busy after work and on weekends. Stick to bike-legal trails, yield on shared paths, and save the card so you can plan a short midweek lap.

Bunyaville - northside singletrack playground

Bunyaville Conservation Park is a northside favourite: purpose-built singletrack plus shared forest trails and management roads. The card lists 10 official MTB-only trails, mostly blue intermediate with two black options, plus connectors for longer XC loops.

Highlights include flowing Gum Nuts, creek-crossing Creek Trail, twisty Zig-zag, climbing-focused Sugar Glider and Mini Van. Step up later on Jurassic and steep Carnivore. Expect roots, rocks, creek beds and punchy climbs - classic SE Queensland flavour within easy reach of Brisbane.

Who you'll often find here

Good to know: NBMBC runs weekly Sunday socials with a no-rider-left-behind approach, plus Dirt Girls women's rides and subsidised coaching from beginner to race. Save Bunyaville and the club, then join a social for your first northside lap.

Samford / Ironbark Gully - progress beyond greens

Samford Conservation Park (Ironbark Gully), about 20 km north-west of Brisbane, mixes dedicated MTB singletrack with longer shared forest trails. The official network is predominantly intermediate, with a few difficult lines - ideal once Daisy Hill or Bunyaville greens feel comfortable.

Queensland Parks lists 12 designated MTB trails plus a warm-up area at Lomandra MTB. Intermediate options include Pipeline, Water Tank, Fitness Trail, Lorikeet, Bergin Creek, Bandicoot, Kombi, Mopoke, Green Tree Snake and Sunrise. Sunset and Whipsnake are graded difficult. Start at the Lomandra trailhead.

Who you'll often find here

Good to know: Samford pairs brilliantly with Bunyaville - short drive or a bigger linking adventure. Download a current map; the network rewards planning.

Nerang National Park - Gold Coast day trip

Nerang National Park is one of SE Queensland's best-known MTB destinations: 20 designated MTB trails covering around 34 km, plus shared management trails. About 12 km inland from Surfers Paradise - an easy Brisbane-to-Coast day trip.

Beginners: start on Training Wheels, Casuarina Grove Circuit, Goanna and Goanna Loop. Intermediate riders get Petes, Rocky Horror, Three Hills, Happy Valley, Wombats, Baileys, Elevator and Explosions. Save the Commonwealth Games loops and Taipan for when you are ready - those are serious black terrain.

Who you'll often find here

Good to know: wildlife habitat (koalas, glossy black-cockatoos, echidnas). Check park notices and the club calendar before you drive down.

Mapleton Forest - Sunshine Coast hinterland greens and blues

Mapleton Forest in Mapleton National Park offers dedicated MTB and shared-use trails through blackbutt, rainforest, palm groves and woodland. Difficulty on the card is Green and Blue - predominantly intermediate XC with natural surfaces, moderate climbs and creek crossings.

Start at the Mapleton Day-use Area. Highlights include the 19 km Oaky Creek Lookout MTB Trail, plus Turpentine Trail (~7.8 km), Piccabeen Circuit (~6.7 km) and Kureelpa Falls Circuit (~8.5 km).

Who you'll often find here

Good to know: pair Mapleton with a club social if you are new to hinterland XC. Save the ride and clubs, then check Events for the next session.

Kenilworth - step-up hinterland adventure

Kenilworth is a different flavour to Daisy Hill or Nerang: forests around Charlie Moreland Camping Area and Mount Allan Firetower, long forestry roads, sustained climbing and backcountry-style exploration rather than manicured singletrack.

Bushrangers MTB Club uses the area for club rides and grades longer outings harder because of the climb to the fire tower - treat this as a progression day, not your first SE Queensland lap.

Who you'll often find here

Good to know: plan water, navigation and daylight. Save Kenilworth for after you are comfortable on Mapleton blues.

How to pick your first Brisbane MTB day

  1. Start close. Daisy Hill or Gap Creek if you are south or inner west; Bunyaville if you are northside.
  2. Green first. Warm up on marked easy loops before blues and blacks.
  3. Ride with a club. NBMBC, Gold Coast MTB, Ipswich Offroad Cyclists, Bushrangers and Noosa Trailblazers all welcome newer riders - socials beat guessing the network alone.
  4. Save venues on Ride the State. Free account, save the cards above, build a trip if you are stacking a weekend (Brisbane + Nerang, or hinterland Mapleton).
  5. Check park notices. Closures, fire danger and wet-weather damage change - follow Queensland Parks and the ride page on the day.
