Beginner MTB on the Gold Coast

QLD · Gold Coast14 Oct 2026By Ride the State

Beginner MTB on the Gold Coast: Glossy Black Reserve at Reedy Creek, Nerang National Park easy loops, Hinze Dam, Pizzey Park pump track, the Oceanway, Gold Coast Cycling Centre, plus BMX at Ashmore, Highland Reserve and Beenleigh. Save the ride cards and plan your Gold Coast weekend on Ride the State.

The Gold Coast packs beginner mountain biking into a surprisingly small footprint. Within about half an hour of the beach you can ride purpose-built green and blue singletrack at Reedy Creek, warm up on easy loops at Nerang National Park, spin the Oceanway, lap Australia's largest asphalt pump track at Miami, or take the kids to a public BMX track at Upper Coomera. Start on the greens at Glossy Black and the rest of the coast opens up as your skills grow.

This guide maps beginner-friendly riding Gold Coast locals actually use, from Reedy Creek and Nerang out to Hinze Dam, Miami, Ashmore, Upper Coomera and a short heritage tunnel day in the Scenic Rim. It links the live Ride the State cards and points you at the clubs that race, coach and look after the trails. Wet-weather closures, park alerts and club race times all change, so check the ride card and the Queensland Parks or club notices before you go.

Glossy Black Reserve - Reedy Creek's compact first MTB day

Glossy Black Reserve sits among the suburbs of Reedy Creek on the Gold Coast and packs around 8 km of purpose-built mountain bike trails into a compact patch of native bushland. Difficulty on the card is Green and Blue, tagged Family Friendly and Beginner Friendly.

The network has eight dedicated MTB trails, including Jumpin' Ant Hill, Lazy Lizard, Rabbit's Run, Cockys Climb, Drop Bear, Cascades, Test Run and Fledgling. Expect flowing singletrack, switchback climbs, berms, rollers, creek crossings and optional jumps and technical B-lines. Fledgling is a short progression trail for beginners; Drop Bear is a standout intermediate descent with berms, rollers and optional jumps. The card's suggested first lap is to climb Jumpin' Ant Hill, continue through Lazy Lizard and finish on the flowing descent of Rabbit's Run.

Who you'll often find here

  • First-timers, kids and families building confidence on green and blue purpose-built trail
  • Locals squeezing a short after-work lap into the Reedy Creek bushland pocket

Good to know: most of the dedicated MTB trails are one-way, while connecting fire trails are shared with walkers — follow directional signage and watch crossings. Parking around the reserve is limited and sits in residential streets, so riding to the trailhead is encouraged where possible.

Nerang National Park - start easy, save the Games trails for later

Nerang National Park is one of South East Queensland's best-known mountain bike destinations: 20 officially designated MTB trails covering around 34 km, plus an extensive network of shared management trails. Difficulty on the card is Green, Blue and Black. The park sits just inland from the Gold Coast, about 12 km from Surfers Paradise, through open eucalypt forest, casuarina groves and pockets of dry rainforest.

Beginners should start on Training Wheels, Casuarina Grove Circuit, Goanna and Goanna Loop. Intermediate options on the card include Petes, Rocky Horror, Three Hills, Happy Valley, Wombats, Baileys, Elevator and Explosions. Expect natural rock, creek crossings, punchy climbs, flowing sections, rock gardens, log drops and technical corners as you step up.

Who you'll often find here

Good to know: download the official Nerang National Park MTB map before you ride — some trails are one-way, others two-way, and shared trails are also used by walkers and horse riders (MTB riders must give way to both). Avoid riding during or straight after heavy rain, and stay on the 20 sanctioned MTB trails. Leave the difficult one-way GC2018 Loop 1–3 and Taipan for later — those were built for Commonwealth Games-level XC and high-speed technical descending.

Hinze Dam - hinterland green miles and picnic stops

Hinze Dam, near Advancetown in the Gold Coast hinterland, is a scenic spot for a relaxed recreational ride surrounded by bushland, water views and rolling hills. Difficulty on the card is Green and Blue, tagged Family Friendly, Beginner Friendly and Scenic.

The dam precinct has shared pathways and quiet areas to explore by bike, with picnic areas, lookouts and visitor facilities — suited to families, casual riders and anyone wanting an easier outing away from the busier coastal paths.

Good to know: the card frames Hinze as more about enjoying the surroundings than chasing big kilometres. Take your time, stop at the lookouts and use the picnic areas. Pair it with Glossy Black or Nerang on a hinterland day once you're ready for more dirt.

Oceanway & Pizzey Park - sealed warm-ups and pump skills

  • Gold Coast Oceanway is the city's flagship coastal shared pathway network of about 36 km from Coolangatta / Point Danger toward The Spit. Difficulty on the card is All levels, tagged Bike Path and Family Friendly. Wide beachfront paths link parks, showers and cafés — keep left, give way to walkers, and note some missing links remain under the Oceanway Completion Strategy while you stitch rideable sections together.
  • Pizzey Park Pump Track at Miami is the Gold Coast's first asphalt pump track and, per City of Gold Coast, Australia's largest asphalt pump track. Difficulty on the card is All levels, tagged BMX, Pump Track, Family Friendly and Beginner Friendly. Council describes more than 2100 m² of rideable surface with rollers, berms, tabletops and wall rides for bikes, scooters, skateboards and inline skates. It sits beside the Pizzey Park Skate Park in the Bardon Avenue sports precinct (completed 2024 per the master plan).

Good to know: both are excellent days for nervous riders or young kids before the first dirt day. Pair a Pizzey session with Nerang or the Gold Coast Cycling Centre if you're touring Gold Coast bike facilities in one trip.

Gold Coast Cycling Centre - velodrome, crits and Nerang next door

Gold Coast Cycling Centre at Nerang is a dedicated cycling complex with an outdoor 356 m asphalt velodrome, about 900 m and 1.5 km road circuits, and direct access to the Nerang National Park MTB trails. Difficulty on the card is Intermediate, tagged Track, Family Friendly and Beginner Friendly.

It's home to Gold Coast Cycling Club, which uses the facility for racing and coached sessions across juniors and adults. Road, track and mountain biking come together in one precinct — you can swap the velodrome for Nerang dirt without moving the car.

Good to know: check the Gold Coast Cycling Club calendar before you go if you want an organised session. Track training caters for juniors and adults; time trials and racing also run through the year.

Pump tracks & BMX - skills that carry onto the trails

  • Ashmore BMX Track at Ashmore Village Park is a purpose-built BMX racing facility, home to Ashmore BMX Club. Difficulty on the card is All levels, tagged Family Friendly and Beginner Friendly. The club (established 1980) welcomes Mini Wheelers from two years old on strider bikes through to adults over 50; Friday night club racing is listed for 2026 with registration/practice from 6:00pm and racing from 7:00pm. All riders need an AusCycling membership to race. Council lists barbecues, drinking fountains, picnic tables, a playground, toilets and soccer fields alongside the track.
  • Highland Reserve Activity Park BMX Track in Upper Coomera is City of Gold Coast's extensive public BMX bike track (corner Sarah Lane and Wimmera Crescent), with picnic shelter, barbecues, drinking fountain and playground. Difficulty on the card is All levels, tagged Family Friendly — distinct from the Ashmore race venue.
  • Beenleigh BMX Track on Logan Street, Beenleigh (Logan corridor, handy for northern Gold Coast riders), is home to Beenleigh BMX Club. Difficulty on the card is All levels, tagged Family Friendly and Beginner Friendly. The club runs gate sessions, coaching and racing from Mini Wheelers through to riders over 60.

Who you'll often find here

  • Nerang BMX Club — long-established Gold Coast BMX club (from 1979) with Mini Wheelers through to competitive adults (no separate Nerang BMX ride card on the hub yet)
  • AusCycling Queensland — membership, licences and the state BMX / MTB calendar

Good to know: Ashmore and Beenleigh are closed racing environments — confirm coaching, practice and race times with the club before you turn up. Highland Reserve is the open public option for a casual hit without race-night timing.

Canungra Tramway Tunnel - short hinterland heritage spin

Canungra Tramway Tunnel in the Scenic Rim is a short cycling and walking experience on the historic Lahey timber tramway formation. Difficulty on the card is Intermediate, tagged Gravel, Family Friendly, Beginner Friendly and Scenic.

From the signed parking area beside Beaudesert–Nerang Road, a compacted-earth trail leads to the roughly 90 m hand-cut sandstone tunnel and picnic area, then about 500 m of former tramway formation toward Duncan Street and Canungra. It's a heritage exploration rather than a long rail trail — bring a light for the tunnel and treat it as an easy hinterland add-on once Glossy Black and Nerang greens feel comfortable.

Good to know: shared with walkers; keep noise down in the tunnel and check conditions after wet weather.

Save for later: Nerang's black trails and Daisy Hill

Once the greens and blues feel easy, Nerang has plenty more to unlock on the same card — the difficult one-way GC2018 loops and Taipan are built for confident intermediate and advanced riders, not a first visit. Heading north toward Brisbane? Daisy Hill Conservation Park in Logan is a classic SE Queensland step-up network (greens through black) covered in more depth in Beginner MTB near Brisbane.

How to pick your first Gold Coast MTB day

  1. Start sealed if you're brand new. A section of the Oceanway, or a family session at Pizzey Park Pump Track or Highland Reserve BMX.
  2. First dirt day at Glossy Black. Green and blue purpose-built trail at Reedy Creek — try Fledgling, then the Jumpin' Ant Hill → Lazy Lizard → Rabbit's Run lap.
  3. Build kilometres at Nerang on the easy loops. Training Wheels, Casuarina Grove Circuit, Goanna and Goanna Loop before anything steeper or rockier.
  4. Hinterland easy day at Hinze Dam. Shared pathways, lookouts and picnic stops when you want scenery without technical features.
  5. Skills day at Pizzey or Ashmore. Pump rollers and berms at Miami, or Mini Wheelers / Sprockets at Ashmore on a club night.
  6. Add the Cycling Centre. Juniors and adults can sample the velodrome and crit circuits, then walk the bike into Nerang National Park next door.
  7. Heritage spin to Canungra. Short tunnel day once you're happy on the greens — bring a light.
  8. Respect the weather. Nerang can be slippery and fragile after heavy rain; stay off closed trails and check Queensland Parks alerts.
  9. Ride with a club. Gold Coast Mountain Bike Club for Nerang socials and skills; Gold Coast Cycling Club for track and road pathways; Ashmore, Nerang and Beenleigh BMX clubs for gate practice and racing; AusCycling QLD for membership and the state calendar.
  10. Save venues on Ride the State. Create a free account, save the cards above, and use the Trip Planner to stack Glossy Black and Hinze into one hinterland day, or Nerang plus the Cycling Centre without moving the car.
